Isabel Talarico is a 2012 Jefferson Award recipient. Read her story about providing animal and horticulture therapy to those with disabilities.
Isabel Talarico, 12 years old, is known for being wise beyond her years. She is a junior volunteer at Glade Run Lutheran Services. Isabel’s duties include working in the therapeutic gardens, helping with the morning routine in the horse barn, feeding animals, sweeping the tack room and undertaking the thankless job of cleaning the messy stalls. Beyond the care of animals, Isabel assists riders with developmental disabilities to mount horses and learn to ride. This requires patience, courage, calmness and encouragement, all in equal proportion. Isabel is always up for the task and gives back with energy and compassion.
Isabel proves her dedication by volunteering every day during the summer, Monday through Friday, from 8:00am until 4:30pm. She always does what is asked of her and goes above and beyond her duties. In the past, Isabel even sacrificed an entire week of summer camp to come to Glade Run to assist with their special needs campers. Last year, Isabel dedicated over 600 hours of service to Glade Run.
For more information about Glade Run Lutheran Services, visit gladerun.org or call 724-452-4453.
The Jefferson Awards are presented by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Highmark, BNY Mellon, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and The Heinz Endowments.

Abby’s pretty much a rock star when we go out. People go out of their way to tell me how cute she is, to talk to her, to be close to her. I love this. Most people see her and think she’s beautiful- and not in spite of her Down syndrome. Abby is beautiful.
